The following statement is a quote from the late American historian, Henry Adams. In it he explains why he feels sympathy for people who are not against slavery. Adams goes on to say that he feels sorry for slaveholders who are being oppressed over their own fault. He says that if someone was not born with the ability to be a slave holder, they should not be blamed for their actions.

Adams also makes the argument that if someone suffers from a defect, then they should be given the same opportunities as other people in society.
